Profile of the supervisor
Prof. dr. Arnold Driessen is a professor in Molecular Microbiology at the University of Groningen since 1997. He obtained his PhD (cum laude) in 1987 at the same university, and following a Postdoc at the University of California (Los Angeles) in 1989/90, he established a research group in Groningen that studies the enzymology and physiology of membrane-bound processes in microorganisms, including organisms and processes that are of industrial relevance. Driessen has published >440 peer-refereed papers and is (co-)inventor of 10 patents.

Profile of the research group
The Molecular Microbiology group studies the molecular biology of filamentous fungi with an emphasis on the discovery and pathway elucidation of the formation of secondary metabolites including antimicrobials. A further focus is the development of genetic tools based on synthetic biology (CRISPR, MoClo) approaches that allow the targeted inactivation of genes in filamentous fungi, the plasmid based introduction of novel biosynthetic pathways and tools to control the expression of such pathways.
